How San Mateo County Homeowners Should Prepare Gutters Before the 2026–2027 El Niño Winter

8/7/2026

The first heavy rain is often when homeowners discover a gutter was already clogged, a downspout was not flowing, or roof debris had collected in a valley. Preparing during dry weather gives you time to address those problems before storm schedules fill up.

Forecast context: NOAA’s July 2026 outlook says El Niño is expected to strengthen through the end of the year, with a high probability of a very strong event during October–December. That does not guarantee a specific amount of rain in San Mateo County. It does make early, practical winter preparation a sensible maintenance decision.

Why gutters matter before winter storms

A gutter system is designed to collect roof runoff and direct it away from the structure. When leaves, needles, moss, roof grit or other debris block that path, water can spill over in places it was never meant to go.

Fascia and sidingRepeated overflow can keep trim and siding wetter than intended.
Foundations and landscapingPoorly directed water can concentrate beside the home or wash through planting areas.
Walkways and entriesOverflow may create slippery areas where family members and visitors walk.
Downspouts and drainsCompact debris can restrict flow and send water back toward gutter seams and corners.

Heavy rain exposes small problems fast

A minor blockage may not be obvious during light rain. A stronger storm moves more roof runoff through the same gutter and downspout system, making slow flow, loose connections and recurring overflow areas easier to notice—but much less convenient to address.

Prepare before the first major storm. The goal is not to predict flooding; it is to give rainwater a clear, intended path away from the home.

A safe ground-level checklist

  1. Look for visible leaves, plants or debris above the gutter line.
  2. Check for dark streaks or staining below seams, corners and downspout connections.
  3. Identify downspouts that discharge directly beside the foundation.
  4. Look for roof valleys collecting leaves, needles or loose moss.
  5. Note areas where water previously crossed walkways or pooled near entrances.
  6. Photograph visible concerns so a professional can review them.
Stay off the roof. Wet roofing, ladders and overhead work create serious fall hazards. Homeowners can complete this visual checklist from the ground and leave cleaning, roof access and repairs to qualified professionals.

Roof debris and gutters should be considered together

Cleaning a gutter without considering the material sitting directly above it may provide only a short-term result. Leaves, needles, loose moss and roof debris can wash down during the next storm. MPW can assess whether the visit should include gutter cleaning, roof debris removal or an appropriate roof moss and soft-washing service.

Where gutter guards fit

Gutter guards can reduce future buildup from larger debris, especially around mature trees. They do not make a gutter system maintenance-free, and the best choice depends on the roof, gutter profile and surrounding vegetation. We recommend guards only when they make practical sense for the property.

MPW’s Winter Rain Readiness options

Gutter cleaning — removal of accumulated debris from gutters and accessible downspout areas.
Gutter guard installation — professional installation selected for the home’s roof and debris conditions.
Roof debris removal and moss care — roof-appropriate methods that avoid damaging high pressure.
Downspout flow check — identification of obvious visible restrictions during the approved service.
Drainage-sensitive exterior cleaning — cleaning of exterior surfaces while accounting for nearby drainage points.

When should San Mateo County homeowners schedule?

Before the first sustained period of heavy rain. Earlier scheduling is especially useful for homes surrounded by trees, homes with a history of overflow, Coastside properties exposed to wind-driven debris, and properties where moss or roof valleys feed material into the gutter system.

We serve San Mateo, Hillsborough, Burlingame, Millbrae, Half Moon Bay and surrounding Peninsula, Coastside and East Bay communities.

Frequently asked questions

Does El Niño guarantee a wet Bay Area winter?

No. El Niño shifts seasonal probabilities but does not guarantee local rainfall totals or a specific storm outcome.

Will gutter guards stop every clog?

No. They can reduce larger debris buildup, but periodic inspection and occasional maintenance may still be necessary.

Can MPW clean the roof and gutters during one project?

Often, yes. The appropriate scope depends on roof access, condition, material and the approved estimate.

Do you use pressure washing on roof shingles or tiles?

We use surface-appropriate, low-pressure roof-care methods rather than treating every surface with high pressure.
